ELECTRE TRI

Method

ELECTRE TRI is a multiple criteria decision aiding tool designed to handle sorting problems (or segmentation problems).
The segmentation problem involves examining the intrinsic value of the action ([dossier de demande], candidate, project, ...) in order to propose an appropriate recommendation for each.
Starting from a finite set of actions evaluated on a family of quantitative and/or qualitative criteria and a set of predefined categories of recommendations (e.g. very good, good, ..., bad, very bad), ELECTRE TRI provides users with two different methods for assigning each action to a category.
Unlike conventional procedures that are based upon weighted sums (compensatory logic), the two procedures provided by ELECTRE TRI do not admit the possibility of total compensation between the performance of actions according to different criteria.
The assignment of any action is based on the comparison of the action and the reference actions by means of the outranking relation.
These two procedures differ in their behaviour (pessimistic or optimistic) in relation to specific actions incomparable with the reference actions.
ELECTRE TRI Assistant is a new module that indirectly helps in the calibration of the model, that is to say that the parameters of the model are fixed by giving some example assignments (corresponding to desired assignments or past decisions).
The parameter values are inferred by a form of regression from the information contained in the example assignments.
Thus, ELECTRE TRI Assistant reduces the cognitive effort required to ascertain the decision makers preferences.

Application domains

ELECTRE TRI applies in particular to the follow areas :

- Credit lending,
- Recruitment,
- Evaluation of students,
- Elimination,
- Diagnostic...

ELECTRE TRI is also a powerful tool for choice problems (cf. ELECTRE IS) or problems of storage (cf. ELECTRE III-IV) when the number of actions is very important. For example, in location problem, there may be a large number of potential sites ; ELECTRE TRI can then be applied preliminarily to reduce the number of sites by pre-established principles, the final selection is then made (by ELECTRE IS) from among the remaining sites.
